The High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED)—formerly known as the GED—is an alternative pathway for adults to earn a high school–level diploma. You can earn your HSED by passing the HiSET test, which measures your skills in five subject areas: Math, Reading, Language, Science, and Social Studies. The knowledge and skills covered on the HiSET are aligned with what traditional high school graduates are expected to know.

                ABOUT HiSEt

Am I eligible to take the High School Equivalency Test?

You are eligible to take the HiSET test if you meet all of the following requirements:

  •  You have lived in Indiana for at least 30 days prior to testing.

  • Have a government-issued ID

  • You have not earned a high school diploma from an accredited U.S. high school.

  • If you have an IEP or 504 plan, please let staff know

  • You are 16 years of age or older.

    • Students who are 16 or 17 must also provide an Indiana school exit form signed by their principal and permission to take the test from their superintendent.

How may I prepare to take the test?

You can enroll in our adult educational program, which provides classes for adults who have not earned a high school diploma. For class information or to enroll in orientation, call (765) 203-1155.

Where do I sign up, and how much does it cost?

Registration must be completed in person at the testing office. At the time of registration, you will need to present one government issued photo ID, sign up for a HiSET ID number, and provide payment. The cost is $36 per subject, or $180 for all five tests. Payment must be made in cash at the time of registration.
Walk in testers are welcome; however, all testers are required to register at least one week in advance. Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify.

How long is the test?

More than 7 hours are needed to complete the five tests. It is given over a two-day period. Our testing site offers morning and evening sessions.

What scores do I need to pass?

To earn your High School Equivalency Diploma, you must take the HiSET test. The HiSET test is administered on a computer, and most scores are available immediately. The only exception is the Language Arts/Writing test, as the essay portion requires human scoring and takes additional time to process. On the HiSET test, you need:

  • 8 or higher on every subject

  • 45 points total

  • A 2 or higher on the essay

Meet all three, and you earn your High School Equivalency Diploma.

What if I fail the High School Equivalency Test?

You may retest any HiSET subject you did not pass — you only need to retake that specific test, not the entire exam. Each subject can be retaken two additional times before another test fee is required. The cost to retake an individual subtest is $36. After your third attempt, you must wait 60 days before making a fourth attempt.

Do I get a high school diploma if I pass the High School Equivalency Test?

If you pass, you will receive a High School Equivalency Diploma issued by the State of Indiana. If you have received your diploma and need another copy, please contact diplomasender.com

What happens once I earn my diploma?

Once you earn your High School Equivalency Diploma, you’ll be invited to participate in our annual graduation ceremony each July. You’re welcome to bring as many family members and friends as you’d like to help celebrate your accomplishment.
Clinton County Adult Education also offers two pre‑apprenticeship programs in Welding and Construction. If you’re interested in continuing your training or applying to one of these programs, please let us know — we’d be happy to help you take the next step.
